CRAIG'S POV

My favorite late ‘60s Fender thinline had a mahogany body coupled with a maple neck. Here’s what I loved about it: The snap of maple and the warmth of mahogany made a perfect combination – just a fantastic and seductive sound. Perhaps more importantly, it didn’t dictate any kind of style of playing. It didn’t say country or blues or rock or jazz. It freed you to impose your style on it. It adapted to you.

That was what I was aiming for when I spoke to Don Grosh about this build. I talked to him, because I think he’s one of the few builders to make a thin line style guitar that’s better than Fender ever made.

Don builds about as fine a guitar as anyone. He mills his own lumber. He winds his own pickups. He’s incredibly fussy about quality and details. And he has a fantastic sense of aesthetics. Just check out his wonderful f-hole shape.

Let me tell you a little about what I mean by the details. Don’s preference for neck finish (one he uses on his own guitars) is satin lacquer on the fingerboard and headstock for protection, with an oiled back for a fantastic feel in your hand. I love it. And I’ll do this again in the future. (By the way, it’s a medium large roundback carve. It’s beautifully done, with just the right amount of heft.)

The pickups are equally fine. Don winds his own, as I mentioned above, and this guitar features a coil-tapped mini-humbucker in the neck position, and his excellent tele pickup at the bridge. It’s just fantastic sounding. It’s got a very lively organic quality.

Together with the wood choice, it’s a guitar with no limitations. And its singularly beautiful aesthetic means it would feel at home just about anywhere.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.
