Collings 290 DC S

You can't visit the Collings shop in the outskirts of Austin without traveling through the Texas hill country on Highway 290. Named after this highway, the 290 DC S boasts amazing versatility in it's tonal spectrum. Equipped with one hand-wound Dog Ear P90 pickup from Jason Lollar, the 290 DC S is a modern day tribute to the original working man's rock'n roll guitar. It has such a complete sound that you won't miss the neck pickup.

As I've noted in previous POV's, I'm a huge fan of the Collings 290 model.

As far as I'm concerned,  it is a far superior instrument than what most other builders offer with a similar design platform and price. Even the “original ” model doesn’t come close to the Collings.  I think one of the reasons is that the care that Collings takes building this model is as deeply felt and thorough as the care they apply to their more expensive guitars.

The 290 a simple guitar. One pickup. Two knobs. It’s not trying to pretend to be anything other than what is is. And it does that amazingly well.

It's made for music with deep organic roots. It can rip through rock, blues and country like a hot knife through butter. Jason Lollar really outdid himself here with this custom dog ear P90. It's got it's own thing.  It has such a complete sound that I barely miss the neck pickup: it's just all there.

Cosmetically,  the double cutaway design gives this guitar a very vintage vibe and perfectly balances with the tortoise pickguard and P90.

I have a special appreciation for guitars that make a statement, who know who they are and what they are put on this earth to do. This is who I am. This is what I do.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality.
