Collings' smallest model is a rarity among fractional size guitars; most listeners never guess that it's not a full-size instrument unless they see it being played. While lacking the deep bass of larger guitars the tone is remarkably balanced, with adequate volume for most applications.
Collings' smallest model is a rarity among fractional size guitars; most listeners never guess that it's not a full-size instrument unless they see it being played. While lacking the deep bass of larger guitars the tone is remarkably balanced, with adequate volume for most applications. The Collings Baby is approximately a 3/4 size version of their OM--12 1/2 inches wide in the lower bout with a 24 1/8 inch scale, and the headstock and bridge are scaled to match. Sometimes the Baby is used as a travel guitar, but it often sees duty as a songwriter's tool, the guitar that's ready at a moment's notice and can be played while seated in any position.
CRAIG'S POV
Typically, when I pick up a 3/4 size guitar (or any travel-sized guitar for that matter), my expectations are equally smaller in terms of sound. Well, this Baby Collings just blows me away. It is every bit as fine in its tonal quality as I would expect from a Collings. While it's not as loud as a dreadnaught, it's tone is everything you'd expect from a Collings. This is a guitar I would be happy to use on a recording session. I don't think any engineer would question its balance and quality. And on top of that, it's a joy to play. Great neck and with the wider 1 3/4" nut width, the smaller scale never makes my hands feel cramped.
It's a real beauty, too. I ordered this without herringbone binding so the esthetic is more modern. This is the perfect guitar for any guitar player who wants a guitar always within arms reach for those moments of musical inspiration. A big thumbs up here.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
