Collings City Limits Deluxe - Koa Top

Crafted with the finest seasoned koa and Honduran mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany, with a carefully hand -set mortise and tenon joint, bring tonal complexity to the table in spades.

This is a fantastic LP - style guitar. It is amazing how Bill Collings took a classic guitar design and made it his own.  First off, I have to mention that this guitar has a koa top in place of the more common maple. Not only is the koa top stunning visually, it also adds a special warmth and creaminess to its tone. Electrically, it does everything you'd expect from this type of guitar, but with the added benefit of having a clear and distinct low end.  The low E and A strings never have that floppy, mushy thing that sometimes afflicts guitars of this style.  The neck contour on this guitar is exactly what a 50's style neck should be - full C with a beautifully executed taper up the neck.  The fret work is immaculate; the nitrocellulose natural finish is impeccable; the whole vibe of the guitar just tells me it wants to be played, and played, and played.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality.
