The CJ is Coliings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this guitar works well with it's shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end.
The CJ is Coliings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this guitar works well with it's shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. A very versatile guitar that can feel at home across many styles of music.
CRAIG'S POVAnother great Collings steeped in a great acoustic tradition. This is such a richly textured instrument in both its stunning sunburst beauty and its awesomely versatile sound. I had this CJ done with a light build, an adirondack spruce top and a short scale length. Here's why: I wanted to try and recreate the magic elements that made up the wonderful 40's J-45 I once owned.
The 24 7/8" scale length combined with the bigger size body imparts a wonderful balance and woody warmth in the bass register. Where this guitar particularly shines is that it's got a very wide range sound and at the same time a real personality across its tonal range. It can be very bluesy in its bass and mids but definitely punches through in its luminous trebles with the clear tones that say Collings all the way.
Beautifully executed in every way, from the comfortably shaped round neck to the wonderful sound, this CJ is Bill Collings' example of everything thing a slope shouldered dreadnought should be .

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
