CRAIG'S POV

There are times when I pick up a guitar and feel that it's so special that it seems to channel the builder throughout its whole being. This City Limits Custom Standard is exactly that kind of guitar. It's insanely gorgeous, with a warm vintage vibe. It's impeccably crafted down to the tiniest detail. It's a Collings through and through, with all the goodness that comes with the name. As always, I consulted with Collings about adding a few extra levels of custom goodness, for CR Guitars, to their Standard model, including 060" cream ABS fingerboard binding (that has been rolled over for a more vintage feel), cream ABS binding on the body and an eastern maple top, reminiscent of Gibson’s circa 1950s guitars.

Collings nailed the goldtop color, and I mean really nailed it. Collings' own optional wraparound tailpiece is precisely machined and adds to the spirit of the instrument. From my point of view, wraparounds translate tone incredibly well. And they're honest. There's "you" in every note. What you put in comes out.

Through my blackface Princeton, I hear a richness in the midrange that comes from its mahogany body, along with the added  articulation that you'd find with a carved eastern maple top. It has deep, solid, organic sustain, that emanates from inside this guitar's very core. If I could find one word to capture what this guitar's all about, it's this: This guitar's got SOUL.

Flip the back pickup on, push the amp hard, and it will sear your flesh. Back everything down and you'll get the sweetest, juiciest gravy dripping from her, too. As an added treat I put 'Goldie" through my Park 45 LTD and let her rip. If you want to hear roar with tons of bluesy character - think Clapton "Bluesbreaker" - this guitar will take you all the way there.

This is one seriously killer guitar in every shape, form, and sound. At only 8.1 lbs, it deserves some serious consideration if you're looking for something truly special.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
