This I35 LC is a true CR Guitars custom creation, inspired by a video of Robben Ford playing his '60s Epiphone Riviera. We went to Collings to recreate that magic, knowing they would couple it with the the superb build quality that they are known for. Plenty of custom options were requested to add to the design and all were nailed with absolute Collings precision.
I am so pleased to be able to present this brand new outstanding creation built by my friends at Collings. This I35 LC is a true CR Guitars custom creation, inspired by a video I had seen of Robben Ford playing his '60s Epiphone Riviera.
After I was inspired by the video, I went to Collings to recreate that magic, knowing they would couple it with the the superb build quality that they are known for. Plenty of custom options were requested to add to the design and all were nailed with absolute Collings precision. Custom finish and aging? Nailed. Custom pickups and electronics? Nailed. Wonderfully profiled C shape neck? Nailed. From the choice lightweight wood to the strap button on the heel, all of my requests and suggestions were nailed. And to top it off? A trapeze tailpiece to add that extra zingy tone and easy string tension. All put together in a most thoughtful, beautifully inspired musical way.
On top of having an awesome vintage esthetic, the guitar has a particularly inspired blues tone. I love mini humbuckers (especially these in this format). The guitar seems to have all the oomph of a great humbucker semi with the added benefits of clarity, articulation and woodiness that these aged Duncans bring to the party. They’re a perfect combination for an incredibly versatile guitar.
This guitar is simply a brilliant, wonderful, vintage inspired design. A big thumbs up on this Collings I35LC custom!

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
