Our newest Collings addition is a stunning and extraordinary D1-T acoustic. The Traditional Series (or "T-Series" guitars) represent an exciting vintage-inspired tonal variation on the distinctive Collings sound, designed and crafted to showcase the most desirable characteristics present in coveted pre-war instruments. Bracing and tone woods are adjusted for weight and thickness to create a voicing characterized by warm, rounded highs and a present low midrange while retaining a quick attack and strong projection.
What makes this a "next-level acoustic" is the wood, particularly the 100-year-old Sitka spruce top. These unique Sitka tops are reclaimed from fish traps, bridges, and float camps in Alaska. Decades of natural aging combined with the high quality of these difficult-to-obtain old-growth tops result in soundboards with a high stiffness-to-weight ratio, providing exceptional warmth, headroom, and resonance. Due to the natural aging process, there are also visual features that set them apart from new Sitka spruce: the color of the wood has a bit of patina, and there are variances found in the growth rings that developed over time as well. The result is soundboards with more "character" than the new Sitka tops.
The combination of this exciting top wood and Traditional Series appointments brings out a powerfully rich and balanced tone, certainly one of the finest new dreadnoughts I've ever had in the shop.
If you love dreadnoughts, this exceptional Collings D1-T is a guitar you must check out.
If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.
ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
