As with the other of Bill's mandolins that we carry, you can pick up this mandolin and be off and running. Moreover, for a guitarist who is used to a big sound from an acoustic, this mandolin keeps pace and sings with a voice you could be happy with even if you are a die hard jumbo acoustic player. It is quite remarkable how much sound comes out of all of Collings' mandolins.

CRAIG'S POV

This little baby is a very sweet sounding, full and balanced mandolin that any guitarist will love, and brings Bill Collings' commitment to making great instruments with excellent stability and playability to the mandolin. The set up is perfect, this mandolin plays like a dream, with a vibrant and balanced sound that just fills the room wherever you are playing. It is quite remarkable how much sound comes out of all of Collings' mandolins.

The bird's eye figure in the back, sides and neck is simply stunning, a wonder to look at, and the hand carved spruce top has beautifully straight and fine grain. While looks might not be necessarily as important as tone, there is nothing like an exceptionally beautiful instrument that you can feast your eyes on while you play beautiful music.

The tone is rich and full, so much so that it almost has the depth in the low end of a mandola. The notes seem to each have an individual presence that jump out at you and surround your body, and the sound envelops you. This mandolin can also cover a wide range of dynamics with ease, from subtle to roaring, and it never chokes out. It sounds fantastic with with a pick, but can also be played with fingers for even more nuance, should you desire to do so.

The tear drop shape sits perfectly in your lap. If you play sitting down, just rest it on your knee. If you're a guitarist, you'll find it immediately comfortable to to play as well.

I just can't say enough about this instrument, and I can hardly believe the price. This is one of the true values in the mandolin world, for a guitarist who also plays--or wants to pay--mandolin, or for the pure mandolin player, you just can't go wrong here. This mandolin will add rich harmonic and melodic possibilities to every player's repertoire.

If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.

ABOUT COLLINGS GUITARS
Bill Collings moved from Ohio to Texas in the mid 1970’s. Spurred by a lack of interest in medical school, this move enabled him to combine lifelong interests in both guitars and tools into the challenge of stringed instrument building and repair. After a couple of years in Houston, several guitars and a few banjos later, he headed west to southern California. Making it only as far as Austin, where he shared shops with fellow luthiers Tom Ellis and Mike Stevens. From there, he set up his own small shop in a wooden "one car" garage. His reputation for outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail quickly spread. In 1989, he rented a 1000 square foot space and hired two helpers. Fast forward to present day where Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists; Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try one.
