The balance of vintage character with modern reliability is what makes this guitar special. Its lightweight mahogany center block and maple laminate body deliver that classic semi-hollow resonance, while the cherry red finish shows just enough aging to feel like an instrument with history without crossing into caricature. This Murphy Lab creation isn't just another relic job – it's a guitar that delivers the genuine experience and tone found only in well-preserved vintage instruments but without the accompanying concerns.
Body shape ES 335, Year 2023 (preowned), condition near mint / no play wear, includes Certificate of Authenticity (COA), all original paperwork.
CRAIG'S POVWhen I first picked up this 2023 Gibson ES-335 Custom Shop Ultra Light Relic in Cherry Red, I knew the Murphy Lab team had nailed it. The subtle checking in the finish, gentle wear on the binding, and that authentic patina on the hardware all combine to create an instrument that feels right in my hands from the first moment.
The balance of vintage character with modern reliability is what makes this guitar special. Its lightweight mahogany center block and maple laminate body deliver that classic semi-hollow resonance I've always loved, while the cherry red finish shows just enough aging to feel like an instrument with history without crossing into caricature.
The neck is where this 335 really connects with me – a comfortable C-profile that feels broken in. Running my hand along the rosewood fingerboard, it has that familiar feel that usually takes decades to develop naturally.
After spending some time with this guitar through a few different amps, I'd say it really hits the sweet spot I look for in a 335. The custom-wound PAF-style humbuckers give you that nice blend of warmth and clarity that's always appealing. Playing clean, you get those articulate tones with plenty of character, and when you push it a bit, it opens up with that expressive voice that reminds me why I've always enjoyed ES models.
Beyond the sound, I particularly appreciate how comfortable this guitar feels. At 7.6 lbs, it is noticeably lighter on my shoulder than many modern 335s, and it has an impressive acoustic resonance that I can feel against my chest even before plugging in.
This Murphy Lab creation isn't just another relic job – it's a guitar that delivers the genuine experience and tone I've found only in well-preserved vintage instruments but without the accompanying concerns. After my time with it, I'm reminded why these guitars have remained essential for so many players, myself included.
