This preowned McGill Super Ace is simply an awesome electric nylon string guitar. It’s no surprise, after playing it, why the Super Ace is in the hands of many high profile artists. Its brilliant ergonomic design is not only extremely comfortable to play but gives the player full access to a full 2 octaves with its 24 frets. It’s truly an inspired work of engineering that is a complete joy to play.
The Super ACE was designed to take the nylon string electric concept as far as possible, both acoustically as well as amplified and has established itself as a state of the art nylon string/electric instrument.
The Super Ace has been the stage axe for both Peter White and Marc Antoine for 15 years. It is also a much recorded guitar by leading LA guitarist Larry Koonse, who has featured it with artists such as Luziana Souza, Billy Childs and Hubert Laws in studio and on stages. Its combined stage and studio abilities set this design apart from other classical electrics - the Super Ace offers an acoustic sound that competes with a classical guitar, but it is comfortable at high volumes on stages with full blown ensembles.
Paul's guitars have a history that include guitarists like Earl Klugh who recorded his classical finger style project Solo Guitar on McGill classicals 25 years ago. Today, his primary stage instrument is a McGill classical from that era.
Without a doubt the Super Ace is one of the most impressive nylon string stage instrument you will ever experience.
In Paul McGills words:
“This guitar is a unique model. The Oregon myrtle is as good as it gets. I was able to get a mytle neck stock as well, which is not easily found. You'll not likely ever see a myrtle neck again. The guitar has an old Gibson top, German spruce with curly claw, a very rare piece you might have seen on an old J-45 or some other late sixties guitar they made. The wood was imported by Gibson from that era and was brought to Nashville in 1976 when they moved here. I acquired it from several sources who worked at Gibson.”
This is simply an awesome electric nylon string guitar. It’s no surprise to me, after playing it, why the Super Ace is in the hands of many high profile artists. Its brilliant ergonomic design is not only extremely comfortable to play but gives the player full access to a full 2 octaves with its 24 frets. It’s truly an inspired work of engineering that is a complete joy to play. The action is set low and yet the guitar is still rich and warm sounding both acoustically and electrically. Let’s also not overlook how remarkably beautiful this showroom quality guitar is. What a gorgeous, soulful looking spruce top along with the rare myrtlewood body and neck!
Paul McGill is a world class luthier and his choice of materials and skills are of the highest order. Bottom line, I’m impressed, really impressed!
