The Silver Sky possesses all the elements to look for in a S Style guitar - resonant body, lightweight, great pickups, in tune tremolo plus all the things to look for in a guitar in general - comfortable neck shape, right and tight fret work and attractive finish. But what's really great is how much guitar you get for the price. It shows the care and concern Paul and John Mayer feel for the player because they easily could have added another grand or more to the price and it would still be a good deal.
"It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like." – John Mayer
The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. More than two and half years in the making, the Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument that is at once familiar but also newly PRS through and through. This model was based off of Mayer and Smith's favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, resulting in an idealized version of a vintage single-coil guitar. The attention that was paid to every detail sets this guitar apart.
CRAIG'S POVAs a PRS dealer over the last several years, my PRS inventory has been almost exclusively Private Stock builds along with an occasional Artist Package model. I felt that my discriminating clientele were best served by guitars that were both hand selected and unavailable at the big box stores. So it was with a fair amount of hesitation when I ordered this PRS Silver Sky. I have great respect for Paul Smith and John Mayer and had no doubt that they could come up with a good S - style guitar for a bit over $2,000, but quite honestly, being a 50 years and counting deep Strat player myself, I felt that their creation would be a typically great PRS guitar, but wouldn’t have a soul of its own.
I was wrong.
It was to my great surprise and delight how good this Silver Sky is! I'm serious about this. When it arrived I really didn't want to like it. With its 3 on a side headstock and familiar Strat shape, I just didn't want to entertain the fact that this could be a really good guitar or maybe heaven forbid, an excellent guitar.
So what did I do? I left it in its case for about a month before I played it. I let all my apprehensions fade and decided to approach the Silver Sky for what it is, NOT for what it isn't. Quite simply, I put aside my prejudices and came at the guitar with a completely open mind. What happened? I like it. I mean really like it. The Silver Sky is a great sounding and playing guitar, totally professional and a real gas to play. It possesses all the elements I look for in a S Style guitar - resonant body, lightweight, great pickups, in tune tremolo plus all the things I look for in a guitar in general - comfortable neck shape, right and tight fret work and attractive finish. But what really blows me away is how much guitar you get for the price. To me that shows the care and concern Paul and John feel for the player because they easily could have added another grand or more to the price and it would still be a good deal. So that's it. A really cool guitar that shouldn’t be judged by what it isn't but for what it is. A guitar with a soul of its own.

ABOUT PRS PRIVATE STOCK
Everyone has heard of PRS Guitars; they are one of America's great entrepreneurial success stories. But not everyone has heard of the Paul Reed Smith Private Stock instruments. These are special guitars, in every sense. That's what inspired us here at CR Guitars to seek them out; they conform perfectly to our vision of what "hand selected" really means. The goal behind the PRS Private Stock of instruments is not only to create the most beautiful and best playing guitars money can buy, but the best sounding. PRS works very closely with each order - through hourly discussions, experimentation, meticulous checks of every detail at each step in the process and making final tweaks when the guitar is complete - to make sure they are building the best guitars possible. If you get an extraordinary instrument from Private Stock that is equally as good as a family heirloom and a musician’s tool to make a living on, then the Private Stock goal has come to fruition.
“Whether built to your specification or ours, every Private Stock instrument is carefully guided through the process by highly talented, seasoned guitar makers, and each completed instrument is checked and signed by Paul Miles and me.
