Steve Grimes's client list is deep and impressive, George Benson, Larry Coryell, and Steve Miller are a few of his most celebrated players. He's one of my favorite builders, period, and has applied his lutherie skills to a wide range of exceptional instruments.
Steve Grimes's 25th Anniversary model is an exercise in archtop mastery, constructed in 2001 using only his very finest woods, collected and saved over the years for just this exceptional model. To put it mildly, this 25th Anniversary features the ultimate in terms of Steve's craftsmanship and materials.
He has always built instruments with the player in mind. So played acoustically, the sound is rich with archtop woodiness flavored with the perfect amount of flat top resonance. This 25th Anniversary model has the most visually stunning Hawaiian curly koa back and sides, along with a beautifully grained and tinted German spruce top. He has used koa for much more than visual impact. He knows how to get the most out of this fine wood.
The workmanship is flawless and the playability is smooth and seductive; this guitar truly expresses Steve Grimes's artistry.
Electrically, I love that Grimes was able to procure a vintage NOS '50s Dearmond Rhythm Chief pickup. It's a rare and fortunate choice. That pickup along with this great build, creates one of my most favorite tones.
It's a great guitar, and it's a rare opportunity to own one of Grimes's best. And that's saying something.
