Rarely do you see an electric guitar made with Brazilian rosewood these days, particularly as fine a piece as is used here. The top, fretboard, back plate and logo are all cut from the plank. It’s simply stunning. This is a very acoustic and resonant electric guitar. It has a tremendous amount of character and sonic range and is equipped with Ron's very last set of came-from-the-Gretsch company DeArmond pickups.
When I opened the case on this Brazilian beauty, one word came into my head: Luxurious.
Rarely do I see an electric guitar made with Brazilian rosewood these days, particularly as fine a piece as is used here. The top, fretboard, back plate and logo are all cut from the plank. It’s simply stunning.
If that’s not enough, Mr Thorn chose prized matching curly korina for the body and neck. The total esthetic of this guitar is just supremely elegant. It’s luxurious, but not flashy in an over the top way. It’s simply classic - because he used only the finest materials.
The body is semi hollow - which Ron says " rings like a bell." I agree.
This is a very acoustic and resonant electric guitar. It has a tremendous amount of character and sonic range. It’s equipped with Ron's very last set of very last-came-from-the-Gretsch company DeArmond pickups. Ron even made wooden rings for these pickups.
I am absolutely loving them. The DeArmonds are bit like under wound P90s. Very 3D and transparent.
What does that mean? Plugged in, the sound is expansive, woody and resonant. The semi hollow body gives a kind of bloom to each note when picked.
I’ve always loved this pickup in a T style guitar. When I was a kid, I studied guitar with a local jazz legend in South Philadelphia. I was all of 13 years old (1966) and my big memory was that my teacher didn't play an archtop. He played a Tele with a DeArmond in the neck. That sound imprinted in my brain, and to this day it still seduces me. Just like this Thorn Brazilian rosewood seduces my senses from every angle.
The fit and finish are as incredible as every Thorn that I've played. Ron thinks of everything and works, in his own meticulous way, to improve every aspect of a guitar. The way the neck is attached to the body, the way the frets are laid into the fretboard, the perfectly carved C shaped neck, it's all so well done.
This Brazilian rosewood guitar is a rare treat. And It really does sound as good as it looks.
If you'd like to find out more about this item, just call or e-mail me. It would be my pleasure to talk to you about it.
ABOUT THORN CUSTOM GUITARS
Raised in a family of carpenters, Ron Thorn had access to a home wood shop for as long as he can remember. Repairing, modifying and building guitars since age 13, his specialty became precision inlay work and by the mid '90s he became the sole inlay artist for the Fender Custom Shop, a position he is still proud to retain today. In 2000 Ron began putting the Thorn name on the headstocks of some of the many guitars he was building and today, with his father and the rest of “team Thorn” - John Gaudesi, Nick Viglienzoni, Tony Ramirez, Glenn Matejzel and Martin Bravo, Thorn’s Glendale, CA operation builds approximately 50 custom guitars a year. Those who know, know Ron as one of the most brilliantly talented luthiers and inlay artists of the 21st century. It is a reputation that has earned him a following that is best described as "near fanatical."
